# Manitou Cave of AL
> Manitou Cave of Alabama is a historic and sacred site recognized for its significant geological, cultural, and historical importance, including its past use by the Cherokee people and as a saltpeter mine. Managed by the non-profit Manitou Cave of Alabama, Inc., the site's mission is to preserve and protect it through conservation and education, aiming to maintain it as a place of peace. The organization is actively engaged in restoring and revitalizing the cave and its surrounding land, serving as a certified NPS Trail of Tears National Historic Trails Interpretive Center. Although currently closed for tours, the site relies on donations to support its ongoing preservation, research, and educational initiatives for future generations.
